In a counter attack on corporators who had complained to the mayor against Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) for registering cases against engineers during council meetings, the force held a workshop where public complaints against civic officials were heard.

More than 50 people expressed their grievances at Thursday's workshop, which was also attended by special commissioner (project) BG Nanda Kumar and BBMP east zone chief engineer KS Krishnaswamy.

The force clarified that they had the right to register public complaints against officials and take legal action against them.

The additional director general of police (ADGP) of the force Dr RP Sharma said they had the power to prosecute negligent officials, who failed to discharge their duties. He said public grievances should be heard by the zonal officials to solve their problems.

"Former BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena had directed the engineers to prevent any violation in the building plan, but officials neglected his order," he said.

Gopal Rao of Malleshwaram complained that a part of the Veda Pathashala land in Malleshwaram was encroached and a temple, marriage hall and commercial complex were constructed there. Even after filing complaints, there was no action and they finally had to approach the BMTF.

Ravi Muniyal of Nagpura said despite complaining to civic officials and deputy mayor S Harish against his neighbour violating the building plan during construction of the house, no action had been taken.

Sharma said BMTF had registered 28 of the 48 complaints which it had received from the public.

He said charge sheets will be filed against the errant engineers in two months.

Special commissioner
Nanda Kumar said he would discuss the complaints with the commissioner.
