There are no unemployed youth in Banashankari Temple ward although it is one of the backward areas in the city.  So ever since the election commission declared the date for by-election, political parties have been vying with each other in wooing them.

With the election slated on June 26, political parties have started a door-to-door campaign. Even though candidates are requesting senior leaders to join them in the campaign to increase their chances of winning the election, they are completely depended on local youths who, they think, can influence the people in voting for them.

“For the past three days, we are campaigning for the candidate in the area. Every day, they are giving us Rs500. There are hundreds of youth who are working for different parties. Apart from the money they get, they are also given food during the campaign. The campaigning will last two to three hours after which we will continue our own regular work,” said Kamaruddin, a local youth.

This does not mean that youth alone are at campaign work. Parties are conscious of the pivotal role women can play in drawing women voters to their candidate. Hence, parties are also employing women in large numbers for the campaign.

While the candidates are busy impressing upon the people about various development activities they will initiate if voted to power, the police department is busy deploying policemen at very nook and corner of the ward to prevent any untoward incident.

The Banashankari police station has stationed policemen in 12 points of Yarab Nagar with each point manned by  15 police constables, 10 head constables, 2 ASI, 2 SI and one inspector.

The Kumaraswamy police station has deployed policemen in 22 points with each point manned by at least 90 police personnel. Two platoons of KSRP police have also been stationed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.

According to the Banashankari sub-division ACP Veerabadragowda, the police have detained 22 rowdy sheeters who are suspected to create disturbance during the election process.

“On Friday, the police and the election commissioner called all the 12 candidates and their supporters and took a letter of assurance from them for the peaceful conduct of the election. All the candidates have promised us that they will not create any trouble or disturbance during the election process,” he said adding that more police personnel would be deployed on the day of election.

In the meantime, Congress leader B Gurappa Naidu alleged that the police illegally detained party worker Gadha Ansar on Sunday night. Another worker Venkatesh, who was also detained, was released on Monday.

“We will protest against the police for creating unnecessary trouble for party workers”, he said.
