The 10-day session of the state legislature from Monday is expected to be a rough one for chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda and speaker KG Bopaiah as the opposition is set to exploit the fissures within the BJP to put the chief minister on the mat for the delay in appointing the Lokayukta, and a host of other issues.

The strictures passed by the Supreme Court against Bopaiah have turned into a potent weapon in the hands of the Congress to demand his ouster.

Leader of opposition in the legislative assembly, Siddaramaiah, has announced that the Congress would mount an attack on Bopaiah, demanding his resignation. Efforts are also on for coordination with the JD(S) to ensure unity in the opposition ranks.

However, the attack on Bopaiah would be confined to protests in the House, demanding his resignation as the possibilities of moving a no-confidence motion is ruled out as the opposition has to give a 14-day notice. The 10-day session, which opens with the customary address by governor HR Bhardwaj to the joint sitting of both houses, is going to be a tough one for Gowda as he has to stave off the offensive from not only the opposition, but also the rebel group led by former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa. This group is expected to turn the session into an arena for show of strength.

Gowda and BJP state president KS Eshwarappa have refused to convene the BJP legislature party meeting ahead of the session, fearing a challenge to the leadership as the rebels are demanding reinstatement of Yeddyurappa as the chief minister. An informal meeting of party senior leaders and legislators has been convened on Monday to discuss the strategies to counter the opposition onslaught.

The delay in the Lokayukta’s appointment, slackness in taking up drought relief work in more than 100 taluks, drinking water problem and power crisis in rural areas are among the issues the opposition will raise during the session.

The tiff between Bhardwaj and the government over appointment of the Lokayukta is another issue likely to embarrass the government.
