A pack of dogs dragged away a one-year-old baby boy, Prashanto, sleeping along with his sisters in a brick kiln, before killing and partially eating his body. The incident occurred between 3 am and 4 am on Wednesday in Bagalur, police said. The boy’s body was found about 10 feet away from the shack where he had been sleeping.

Prashanto’s parents — Sukhodeb and Kokai from Orissa — were working nearby when the dogs killed him. The baby’s screams were  probably drowned out by the loud music playing in the kiln, police said. His sister, five-year-old Urmila, believed that the kiln supervisor had killed her brother and tossed him to the dogs.

“He did not scream when the dogs dragged him out. We did not hear dogs barking. The supervisor must have killed my brother,” she said. Prashanto was the only boy among six siblings.

Police said the dogs, kept by kiln supervisor Gunti Yadav alias Munsi of Uttar Pradesh, had eaten 25% of the body. The right leg, right hand, part of the cheek, a finger on left hand and some portion of the abdomen were missing.

Yadav has been arrested under Sections 289 (negligent conduct) and 304-a (causing death by negligence) of Indian Penal Code based on a complaint by the boy’s parents. A dog was also caught, police said.

Urmila said that Yadav was angry with her family for demanding  money in advance. Yadav had denied them money, and  threatened to kill Urmila or Prashanto if they persisted with the demand.

Prashanto’s parents alleged that Yadav kept as many as 10 dogs, which used to accompany him to the kiln.

Urmila said her brother was not the only child killed at the brick klin. She said a 12-year-old girl, Kumari Das died last month after she was bitten by a snake. The deceased girl’s father Sadhu Das returned to his native place Orissa with his family, pledging not to visit this city where his daughter lost her life. The Bagaluru police confirmed that a girl had died of snake bite.
