The Janata Dal (Secular) is the only party that is literally unabashed about its love for godmen, astrologers, palmists, numerologists and occultists. JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda makes no bones about his beliefs and piety, despite the secular suffix his party wears.

Deve Gowda and his sons won’t leave their house without checking out whether the stars are all in their right places. Every moment from rahukala to yamagandakala to gulikakala are taken into consideration before they make the smallest of their moves.

There’s no parochialism in Gowda’s trust in astrologers. He believes as seriously in Kerala astrologers as he does in Narayan jeears of Tamil Nadu’s Ahobala mutt and Koppa’s Balagopala Jois.

When a snake entered Gowda’s house a couple of years ago, a three-day homa was performed with Narayan jeears, himself playing the master of ceremonies.

Sometimes Gowda takes suggestions from SK Jain and Daivagna Somayaji.

The family of the former PM is said to believe that he can’t win an electoral contest against a woman candidate. Their belief was reinforced after Gowda lost to Tejaswini of the Congress in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.

Interestingly, the Gowdas and their arch-rivals both share the same astrologers.

Kumaraswamy and Yeddyurappa both are guided by the same astrologer.  This astrologer had advised Kumaraswamy to wear a panche and a white half-sleeved shirt when he was sworn in as chief minister on February 4, 2006. The same astrologer advised Yeddyurappa to wear a white-coloured silk dhoti when he took oath.

Both leaders followed the astrologer’s prescription, only to lose power before their terms ended.

Gowda’s rival always ridicule him by saying that he deploys maata-mantra (black magic) against his detractors.
