For the first time in the history of the BBMP, the chairman for the standing committee for appeals and other officers will have to wear suit while conducting hearing of the appeals. The decision was taken to maintain court decorum during the hearings.

According to a BBMP source, the appeals committee chairman D Venkatesh Murthy will have to come in suit to conduct the hearing. “Every Friday, the committee conducts hearing. Apart from the chairman, the legal officers and council secretary who attend the hearing should also come in suit. As the appeals committee is a quasi-judiciary, the decision was taken to maintain a court decorum during the hearings”, the source said.

This dress code is also applicable to eight council reporters and one recording officer who attend the council meetings.

“During the meetings, the council reporters and recording officer used to come in normal dress. Now they have to wear suit while attending the meeting. This is done to distinguish the officers from councillors. The uniform for officers was practiced in Vidhana Soudha,” the source said.

The council secretary sent the proposal to the commissioner who gave his green signal on Saturday. When DNA contacted Murthy, he said they are expecting approval from the commissioner.

The committee has so far heard over 60 appeals from various departments.
