The city seems to have finally woken up to the menace of moral policing. Some organisations now want to take it head on and go beyond tokenisms such as issuing statements, holding press conference, and meetings.

The Jaago Mangalore, along with 12 other like-minded voluntary organisations, have decided to carry out a mass campaign against moral policing. “The campaign will include road shows, lighting of candles, screening of the video clippings of the messages of eminent persons and public condemnation of moral policing,” Vijayanath Shetty co-ordinator of Jaago Mangalore said.

The campaign will begin on August 16 and events will be held at five different places in the city till August 21. The participants in the campaign will sport Gandhi caps, wear black bands, and carry torches during the road show.

“The campaign was a part of the larger movement called ‘Let’s make Mangalore a better place to live’ to improve the quality of life in the city, basically aimed at individual liberty and dignity of women. The protest aims to continue the focus on the aftermath of July 28 Padil attack and ensure that the issue is not forgotten. We also want concrete steps to be taken to punish the guilty and avert repetition of such incidents,” said Dinesh Hegde Ulepady, an activist and an advocate against moral policing.

Though Jaago Mangalore had lauded the timely action by police in arresting the 22 accused in the homestay attack in a matter of hours, they felt the subsequent statements by the Karnataka State Women’s Commission president C Manjula and her interim report has tried to misguide society.

The campaign organisers have also drafted a charter of demands that will be presented to the government during the campaign period. The demands include formation of a special police squad to conduct inquiry into Padil attack; appoint a special prosecutor for the case and a special court for the trial; revival of anti-rowdy squad and an inquiry into the incidents of moral policing in Mangalore in the last ten years.

Other voluntary bodies taking part in the campaign include Arise Mangalore, Karnataka Rajya Trabetudarara Sanchalana, Mahilapara Chintana Koota, Mangalore, Ahinda, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Samvidanika Chaluvali, Mangalore, Bala Karamika Paddatiu Virodhi Andolana. Praja Pragathi Ranga, Breakthrough Human Rights Organisation, MCHRO, and PUCL.
