The Karnataka government is hopeful that power cuts will be a thing of past and the state will be power surplus in 10 months. MN Vidyashankar, principal secretary, department of industry and commerce, said on Friday that the state government was taking  measures to add 1,700 MW of power by June 2013.

“We are expecting to add 500 MW of power from Udupi power plant, 500 MW of power from Bellary Thermal Power Station and also get 200 MW from the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu. We are expecting to add the remaining quantity of power from renewable energy segment,” Vidyashankar said at the India Innovation Summit, organised by Confederation of Indian Industry here.

Emphasising the need to have transparency and accountability in spending taxpayers’ money, he said there are 636 districts in the country and the government has been spending Rs1,200 crore for development works in each district. “However, there is no transparency and accountability on the spending of tax-payers’ money. Innovation of technology makes it easy to have transparency in spending of funds,’’ he said.

As for the recently introduced state government’s e-procurement portal he said it was the largest in the world. “The state government has floated 58,000 tenders through e-procurement portal and by this year end it is expected to be around 79,000. I am happy to announce that our portal has been adjudged as the best in the country.”

Elaborating on the state government’s initiatives to promote nano technology, he said the government has decided to establish Rs1,500-crore Indian Institute of Nano Technology, adjacent to Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. “We have invited tenders for Nano Park and two companies have evinced interest to take up the work. I expect to have 500 to 600 PhDs in nano technology by end of 2016,’’ he said.

According to Vidyashankar, the proposed Biotech Park at Electronics City would be ready by January. “The Biotech Park will be established on 16 million sq ft of land at the Electronics City,’’ he said.

Earlier, Kris Gopalakrishnan, president designate of CII and executive co-chairman, Infosys, said that it was important for a country like India to provide a seamless services to the people even those living in the remotest parts.

“We have 132 cars per 1,000 people. In a developed country 50-70% of people own cars. With the present car population itself, there are traffic and pollution problems. We are a still a poor country. Automobile sector can create many jobs. We are transforming ourself from agri-dependent society to manufacturing-dependent society,” Gopalakrishnan said.
