A bleak future stares at 300-odd freshly recruited non-teaching staffers at Mysore Medical College and Research Institute and the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.

The state government will not reconsider its August 26 order to cancel their appointments.

Their predicament is due to allegations of a recruitment scam involving officials demanding and receiving bribes between Rs3 lakh and Rs5 lakh to select these candidates for jobs in these two colleges. It led to medical education minister Ramachandra Gowda resigning on Sunday over his close associate allegedly being involved in the scam.

Now those who were recruited in these two colleges through procedures found to be irregular by two separate probes may neither get their monies (allegedly paid as bribes by some candidates) nor their jobs back.

The state government will now call for a fresh round of recruitment to be done within the next 60 days, says a state government report to be filed before the high court on Tuesday.

However, the only silver lining for those whose recruitment has been cancelled is that they will still get a chance to re-apply for the fresh recruitment. And if they are selected again, they will be eligible for a salary of two months.

The state government will, on Tuesday, file a detailed report before the high court stating that it would not reconsider its August 26 order of cancelling the appointment of non-teaching staff to Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. But it does not mention the appointments made in Mysore Medical College and Research Institute.

It has contended that as there were large-scale irregularities in the appointments, it would not be possible to segregate legal and illegal appointments as earlier directed by the high court.
The 21-page report, filed by medical education secretary IM Vittal Murthy, says that all jobs, legally or illegally granted earlier to the candidates, would be cancelled.

The report, to be filed before justice Ramamohan Reddy, was handed over to the counsels of the petitioners and respondents on Monday.
