The Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday chargesheeted Pune-based Metachem Manufacturing Company Private Limited (MMPL) which is stated to be owned by Jayant Pawar, nephew of union minister and Maharashtra political heavyweight Sharad Pawar.

According to records available with the Lokayukta police, Jayant Pawar was twice issued a notice but he did not appear to give his statement, either in the Ankola court or to the Lokayukta police.

The 10,000-page chargesheet alleges that MMPL had stored its iron ore in the storage jetty belonging to Adani Mining Company Limited at Belekeri port. Lok Ayukta sleuths who raided the port in March 2010, found that the stockpile of iron ore handled was at odds with what was stated in the receipts and other papers. When the company claimed ownership of the stockpile, the Lokayukta asked the company to produce passes, permits and other papers. Instead, the company sold the stockpile to a certain DB Brothers and Company based in Belgaum.

Lok Ayukta officials from Udupi had confiscated mounds of iron ore belonging to MMPL stored in the storage yard hired by Adani Mining. Out of the total 8.05 lakh tonnes of ore that has vanished from the port, MMPL owned a major portion.

The MMPL had sold 7,312 metric tonnes of iron ore to DB Brothers. In consideration of the sale, `3.79 crore was deposited in MMPL’s account in Saraswath Co-operative Society at Sangamawadi, Pune.

The Lok Ayukta police have  filed a case against MMPL in Ankola
police station. A supervisor in the MMPL office at Belekeri was
arrested.

The Lok Ayukta has issued similar notices to 53 other companies, each of whom have assigned officials who have taken anticipatory bail without appearing before the court.

CID officials told DNA that they have chargesheeted 24 companies out of a total of the 53 companies that have been facing charges of theft of ore and illegal export.
All the chargesheets have been filed in the Ankola court.
