Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda’s honeymoon period is coming to an end as he girds up to face the opposition’s onslaught in the first legislature session, which starts on Monday, after he took over from BS Yeddyurappa.

Gowda, who is the second chief minister who will enter the House without being a member of it after Ramakrishna Hegde, has trouble

in store not only from the opposition benches but from within the BJP too. He is expected to get elected to the legislative council in the by-poll to be held on December 22.

The thumping victory of Sriramulu in the Bellary Rural by-poll and the party’s move to suspend three BJP MLAs—B Nagendra, Somashekar Reddy and Suresh Babu for their loyalty towards Sriramulu—threatens to keep the chief minister on tenterhooks during the 10-day session.

The opposition is armed with issues galore to exploit the chinks in the BJP’s armour. All eyes will be on Yeddyurappa, who was released from jail recently.

He will have to settle for back benches as he is not even a minister. With more than 60 party MLAs owing their allegiance to him, his every move would have a bearing on the government.
With former minister Janardhana Reddy still in jail and many former BJP ministers facing serious charges of corruption, the BJP is vulnerable as any debate on illegal mining and corruption would, for the first time, see a clear split within the BJP while facing the opposition.

The Bellary boys led by the indomitable Sriramulu, with support from Nagendra, Somashekara Reddy and Suresh Babu, are certain to join ranks with the opposition that could destroy the BJP.
The change of loyalty by the group is showing signs of spilling many a discomforting fact on past misdeeds in Bellary, which could land the government in trouble.

The opposition is preparing to move a no-confidence motion against speaker KG Bopaiah.

Furthermore, debates on illegal mining, land scams, severe drought in the state, failure of the government to find a suitable choice for the post of Lok Ayukta and power crisis would put the government on the mat.
