The top diplomat of Japan in India came to a regional business body’s meeting driven by ‘auto’ pilot. Toyota’s success seemed like the central motif as Japanese ambassador to India, Hideaki Domichi, asked his countrymen-industrialists to rework on their perception of India.

“I’m advising them (Japanese entrepreneurs) to bring the best technology and form good partnerships with India, making India hub for their global strategies, including establishment of research and development,” he said at the 33rd general meeting of Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) in Bangalore on Friday.

Domichi made a very candid admission of Japan’s feeble economic presence in India, much to the delight of the captains of the industry gathered at Taj West End. He thanked the Karnataka government for its support to his country’s business ventures, especially to the auto giant, Toyota.

The top diplomat’s presence speaks volumes about Toyota’s interest in Bangalore. The company’s association with the city will grow stronger when Shekhar Viswanathan, deputy managing director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, which is headquartered in Bangalore, takes over as the president of BCIC.

As his speech progressed, he sounded more like an Indian ambassador to Japan for the zeal he showed in promoting India.  “Japanese companies should form partnership with India. We are realising the importance of India and its economy,” Domichi told DNA on the sidelines of the meeting. “We may have to have closer business relations with India, especially in IT.”

Domichi said his country was facing a serious threat: fast graying population. “Population decline and aging mean we cannot maintain our competitiveness by turning to our internal strength and demand. The country has to go for external demand.”
