“Unless we innovate, we will be left behind and as a nation. We need to do things differently,” said prime minister Manmohan Singh, in Chennai on Saturday. He addressed the gathering after inaugurating the new assembly cum secretariat complex at the Omandurar government.

The PM, along with Sonia Gandhi, left for New Delhi immediately after the function was over. Gandhi visited the party office Sathyamurthy Bhavan before she arrived for the inauguration and became the first ever Congress president to visit the party’s headquarters in the state.

“India is on the cusp of change. The time has come for a qualitative change and a quantitative leap forward. We need to find new ways to go forward. New ways to do old things. The age of innovation is upon us,” the PM said in his 15-minute speech.

“Legislators are watchdogs of public finances and they must ensure that there is no wasteful use of public money, and that the resource mobilisation processes do not adversely affect the incentives for savings, risk bearing and the quest for entrepreneurship and pursuit of innovation. Collectively, they need to deal sternly with corruption and inefficiency in our governance processes. Legislatures are sacred places. They are places for working for the cause of our sisters and brothers who have bestowed upon us the privilege to represent them,” he stated.

“They are places for upholding the ideals of our Constitution and indeed for bringing them into action. Legislators appraise contemporary legislation and enact new laws,” he added while hailing the political stalwarts from Rajaji, (the first governor general of Independent India), Kamaraj, Annadurai, C Subramaniam, R Venkataraman, MG Ramachandran to current chief minister M Karunanidhi.

Sonia Gandhi too, showered praises on Karunanidhi stating that his advice to the union government to resolve even small problems was of great significance.
