The count of Bangalore-based schools embracing the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) as offered by the Cambridge University is ever increasing with Sri Vani Education Centre being the latest one to offer IGCSE qualification as part of its curriculum.

“This certification is offered by one of the best universities in the world. The key difference between IGCSE and the curriculum offered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) is the fact that students are made to ponder more on the concepts rather than simply learning them by rote,” said Sharada Prasad, secretary, Sri Vani Education Centre.

Prasad said the current educational environment does not allow students to go in depth into the subjects they study. “If you notice these days, teachers are barely competent. Students are simply not taught to ask questions when they are taught concepts,” he added. In case of IGCSE, students are forced to probe further into concepts. “Problems and situations are posed to students to solve rather than just have them simply state facts they have learnt from books,” said Prasad. He also noted that the IGCSE syllabus is application-orientated.

While Sri Vani  Education Centre is the latest to hop onto the IGCSE bandwagon, the city boasts close to 50 international schools all of which offer this certification. Overall, there are about 370 schools in the country that offer this certification. “There are two levels in IGCSE - Advanced Subsidiary that is equivalent to 1st PU and a second PU equivalent. But in terms of quality, they are comparable to Advanced Placement courses offered in the US,” said Prasad.

With its difficult syllabus and high standard, students who opt for IGCSE usually have their sights set at top universities in the world.

“Students who opt for IGCSE usually end up applying abroad at the end of their school education,” he said. IGCSE is recognised by most universities in India, including the Bangalore University.
