An 18-year-old girl who reportedly married an engineering student when she was a minor complained to senior police officers that her parents and Kodigehalli police forced her to undergo an abortion recently.

Additional commissioner of police (law and order) T Suneel Kumar directed Kodigehalli police inspector Puneeth Kumar to investigate the complaint. The girl, Kanasu (name changed), told Kumar that she was she married her lover Hemadri Yadav, an engineering student, when she learnt that her parents were planning to get her married to someone else.

Kanasu said she forced Yadav to elope and get married. He took her to Mysore, where they got married on April 4, 2011. Meanwhile, Kanasu’s parents filed a compliant with Kodigehalli police.

The police nabbed Kanasu and Yadav in Salem and registered a case  against him for kidnapping a minor and having sexual intercourse with or without consent.

Kanasu told Kumar that after they were nabbed and her parents found that she was pregnant, her parents and Kodigehalli police inspector Puneeth Kumar forced her undergo an abortion when she was two-and-a-half months pregnant.

Kanasu further contended that her husband is innocent as she had forced him to elope.

RTI activist KN Jagadish accompanied her to Suneel Kumar to file the complaint. Jagadish said the girl’s parents and Kodigehalli police had harassed her and he was just helping her get justice.
Puneeth Kumar said had done his duty in accordance with the law. Kumar added he acted on the complaint that was registered, traced her and produced her before the court.

Kumar said the court handed over the girl to her parents. He added that Kanasu’s allegations are false.

Sources said Jagadish is pursuing the case because he holds a personal grudge against Puneeth Kumar, who had earlier arrested him twice, and also opened a rowdy-sheet against him.
