Long before Right to Education Act (RTE) came into existence, Murali Prasad, an auto-rickshaw driver, decided he would do everything possible as a father to make sure his children lead a better life.

It has been a long struggle for him, but his son Rakshit Prem and daughter Karunashree—students of St Anthony’s School in JC Nagar—are excelling at their school. Though Rakshit, a Class VIII student, has a hearing impairment, Prasad has left no stone unturned to make sure his son does well at studies.

“I want their future to be good. I don’t want them to struggle the way I do,” says Prasad, who hopes that his son will be a software engineer and his daughter a doctor one day.

Prasad’s wife does some tailoring at home. “Though I did not go to school, I am proud that my children are attending school,” says Prasad who has been working as a driver for 12 years.

“While my son usually scores 80-90% in his exams, my daughter has secured 94% in Class I,” says the proud father.

Rakshit wants to follow his cousin who is pursuing computer science. “I have been saving money to buy him a computer,” Prasad says.

Balraj, another driver who never went to school, has a similar story to tell—he has made sure that his three daughters are well-educated. While his elder daughter Veena is a nurse, his younger daughters are pursing pre-university. “I don’t want them to struggle like me. So, I have made sure that they study well,” he says. His younger daughters hope to become a doctor and a police officer. Balraj says he will wait and see what the future holds.
