The high court on Wednesday refused to stay the implementation of speed governors in transport vehicles in the state.
Lorry drivers had moved the court questioning the state government’s decision to implement speed governors (speed limiting devices) in vehicles. The petition was filed by the federation of the Karnataka state lorry owners and agents’ association challenging the government’s notification on September 17, 2011 for implementation of speed governors.
The petition said that the Centre had decided to withdraw the power conferred upon the states to enforce the use of speed governors until the difficulties faced by the state representatives were resolved. The Centre had taken the decision in meetings with transport ministers of states on December 10, 2007 and August 6, 2008. The petitioners had said that Karnataka government did not address their concerns before passing the order regarding speed governors and thus the order was invalid.
They wanted the notification quashed. The petition came up for hearing before justice Abdul Nazeer. But the judge refused to stay the implementation of speed governors.
