With just 10 days to go for Christmas, the market is abuzz with shoppers picking up decors to deck their homes.

Unlike Christmas celebrations last year, which mostly comprised bells and stars, this year, one can put up more interesting ornaments on their Christmas trees.

This yuletide, the shops in the city have stocked a lot of items from China, Korea, and taiwan, such as reindeer, golden cherubs, stockings, wreath, miniature lanterns, snowman, and more. In fact, some shops even sell Christmas-themed table clothes and curtains.

And the show stealers, as usual, are the Christmas trees. This time, the shops have housed a variety of synthetic trees, with prices starting from Rs25 onwards.

“The sizes of the trees vary from 1 feet to 30 feet. We have over 650 varieties of decoration items and 200 varieties of stars alone,” said Nataraj, owner of Sri Narayan and Co, a century-old store for decorative items at Ebrahim Sahib Street.

Commercial Street, Avenue Road and Majestic are the places to be, if you are planning to buy a Christmas tree.

“We have trees ranging from Rs50 to Rs8,000. The prices depend on the quality of the tree. We have regular, pine, snow pine, white pine, mixed bristles, and ones made of optical fibre,” said Nataraj.

Ebrahim Sahib Street, which is the Mecca for Christmas shopping, has stores that are as 100 years old and selling authentic Christmas must-buys.

“Stars, coloured bells, pine cones, drums, streamers and small Santa dolls are the most commonly sought-after decorations for Christmas,” said Bhanu Prakash, associate at SS Mart on Ebrahim Street.

Besides Indian-made decors, most of the ornaments have been imported from China and Korea.

“We’ve been dealing with decoration items for over 40 years and we have everything from Christmas trees to home decorations like streamers, holly, mistle-toes and runners.

There are ready-made packages too. We have decoration packages ranging from Rs50 to Rs5,000. We also sell decorations separately for those who like elaborate decorations at home,” Said Nemichand from Thulsi Marketing, Avenue Road.

While many have their favourite places, some like to experiment.

Suzan Christopher, who came to Safina Plaza to check out an exhibition-cum-sale by Evergreen Christmas Centre, said: “When we were kids, we used to go to Avenue Road to buy trees and decorations. But for the last three years, I have been going to different places. Here, I like the reindeer and pine ornaments. I would buy my tree this year from Commercial Street.”

Some conservative
lot, however, still prefer Avenue Road for Christmas shopping.
