Got swine flu? Stay at home, don’t come to school. The health department, on July 23, had issued this H1N1 directive asking schools in Karnataka to check students returning from trips abroad, but the notice is yet to reach the schools.

What’s disturbing is the fact that the department of public instructions has still not received this circular, which can be then forwarded to the education department and to all the schools in the state. The situation is alarming especially after a Delhi school closed down on Saturday fearing a swine flu outbreak. A class 9 student of south Delhi’s Vasant Valley School, who went abroad for a trip, tested positive for the H1N1 virus forcing the school to shut down and tell all its students to stay at home.

It’s even worse in Pune where four schools were shut till July 31 as the total number of affected students reached 23.

In its circular, the health department has asked schools to monitor kids with flu-like symptoms and tell them to stay at home and get tested. “Students will be allowed to come back only after a doctor has cleared their case,” Dr Usha Vasankar, director of health and family welfare department, told DNA. The circular, Usha said, was issued much before the incidents in Pune and Delhi but it hasn’t reached the schools. The department of public instructions, which issues such circulars, says it is yet to receive the directive. “We have not received any circular, therefore, we have not sent any instructions to the schools so far,” said Chidri Shankaraiah, director, department of Secondary Education.

This means schools have to manage on their own. A few schools are planning seminars to spread awareness about swine flu among children.
