All government programmes in Mysore were boycotted by journalists on Saturday, even as their counterparts in other cities took out rallies to protest against the brutal attack on mediapersons in Bangalore on Friday.

When chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda went to inaugurate a government scheme in Mysore, the journalists in the press enclosure raised slogans and displayed placards, condemning the Friday incident. Gowda tried to assuage their feelings and assured that the erring lawyers would be brought to book. However, the journalists demanded nothing short of immediate arrest of the marauding lawyers.

The chief minister said he had spoken to media chiefs in Bangalore before he left for Mysore and had assured them in this regard. However, the presspersons in Mysore were not satisfied and all of them walked out of the venue. They did not cover any programme that Gowda attended in the city.

Throughout his trip to Mysore on Saturday, Gowda was devoid of his trademark smile. He wore a grim look while listening to the Mysore District Journalists’ Union. He was in a pensive mood for more than 15 minutes and did not even respond to the prompts of district in-charge minister SA Ramadas and MLA Shankarlinge Gowda.

In other parts of the state, the journalists held silent processions. They wore black bands and marched to the district offices in their respective districts. They presented a memorandum to the deputy commissioners, addressed to the chief minister and urging him to act against the agitating lawyers.

Spokespersons for the district associations said that in all the centres, the march began at 10 am and got over within 45 minutes, with minimal or no inconvenience to general public and traffic. Such processions were held in Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapur, Karwar, Madikeri, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Hubli, Dharwad and Belgaum. In Chitradurga and Davangere, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike supported the journalists.
