‘Challenging Star’ Tugudeepa Darshan has joined the league of ailing VIPs admitted to hospitals, after he was remanded to judicial custody.

In a recent trend, VIPs have complained of health problems to evade court or prison time. Already, former chief ministers BS Yeddyurappa and HD Kumaraswamy; Kumaraswamy’s wife Anita Kumaraswamy; former ministers Katta Subramanya Naidu and Hartal Halappa; and Swami Nityananda, among others, have used this ploy.

Darshan, who was arrested on Friday for allegedly abusing his wife, was remanded to 14-day judicial custody and sent to Parappana Agrahara on Friday night. But he complained of health problems before officials sent Darshan to his cell. He was rushed to the Nimhans and Victoria Hospital for various check-ups.

Darshan was finally admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD).

Parappana Agrahara chief superintendent TH Lakshminarayana told DNA that Darshan collapsed as soon as he entered the jail and was taken to the hospital; he was administered glucose drip. Doctors said he was in shock and referred him to Nimhans.

“We sent him to Nimhans where doctors referred him to Victoria Hospital and then to RGICD, after they found symptoms of asthma. He is admitted for treatment and will be back in jail after being discharged,” said Lakshminarayana.

Darshan left the jail hospital at 2.50am on Saturday, he said, adding the City Armed Reserve (CAR) usually escorts patients when they need treatment.
