On Saturday, noted writer Dr UR Ananthamurthy said that politics was still a puzzle unsolved, and it was thus even for Gautam Buddha. At the launch of the book Pampadhyaya, complied by professor KE Radhakrishna, Ananthamurthy dug deep into the tussle between politics and development.
Ananthamurthy gave an example of a conversation between Buddha and Ajathashatru as a part of his speech. “Ajathashatru, being a king, wanted to ask Buddha how to rule without causing harm to anyone, but Buddha had no answer because politics or kingship revolves within its rules, and no one can avoid the loss of one for the gain of another,” he said. Politics today also revolves around the same lines, he said.
“There is always a conflict between the people and the government. It has prevailed from the time of the Ramayana,” he said stressing on the topic of politics as power and constrained to certain rules.
He said that marketing politics has been a problem right from the time of the Magadha Dynasty, and he shows its current relevance by citing the example of bauxite mining. “To acquire bauxite we have to destroy hills, but the tribal community worship hills.
However we see the necessity of bauxite as more important,” he said, “People today commit all sorts of sins and turn into criminals and finally offer a valuable crown to God himself. This has disturbed me so much that I feel embarrassed to go to Thirupathi anymore.”
He went on to speak about patriotism, truth and negotiation in the works of Pampa, which paved the way for Kannada literature. Former CM HD Kumaraswamy, who was present on the occasion agreed with what UR Ananthamurthy said, and added that most politicians crave for power, but forget the responsibility that comes with it.
