Two drunk Iranian women allegedly punched a traffic sub-inspector when he stopped them during a routine drink driving check at Cubbon Road on Wednesday.  It didn’t end there. The two women, who were later identified as Asar Fajeli (28) and Fatima Mohamid(26), went on a rampage bringing traffic on the busy stretch to a halt and biting a TV reporter who was covering the incident.

Shivajinagar traffic sub-inspector Rao Ganesh J stopped Fatima’s Alto for the check at around 11.30pm.  Her friend Fatima was in the rear seat. Their breath tests revealed that Fajeli and Fatima had alcohol way beyond the permissible limit. Fajeli didn’t have a driving licence and the registration papers of the car were also missing.  It would have been another routine drink driving haul-up but when Rao seized their road tax receipt, Fajeli went berserk.

She pounced on him, punching him as he tried to wriggle out of her grip. The commotion went on for a long time and some reporters reached the spot. Even they were not spared. The two women unleashed a vicious attack on the reporters and allegedly bit the finger of one of them. They even broke a TV camera. Rao was lucky to escape when a crowd intervened and pelted stones at Fajeli’s car.  More back-up landed at the spot and the two Iranian women were taken to the Commercial Street police station.

Fajeli and Fatima were seen pleading with the police officials. They fear a much more severe punishment in Iran than they would face here, if sent back. The two women have been booked under five various sections of the Indian  Penal Code, including causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means (the bites) and using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty.

The police officer and the journalist were later given anti-rabies injections. The girls showed injury marks and alleged that it was the police who had assaulted them. No women constable was present at the spot to handle the two Iranian girls. The police have seized their passports and travel documents and have informed the Iranian embassy in Delhi and the consulate in Hyderabad. The two have been remanded to judicial custody for two days.
