Do not expect that the launch of Namma Metro will alleviate your traffic woes, for the route of Phase I is only 6.7-km long and serves only a minuscule percentage of Bangalore’s population, pegged at about 90 lakh.

“If Metro is to take vehicles off the roads, Phase II needs to be completed,” said KR Srinivasa, managing director of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). “Not many people will use the Metro at this stage as it doesn’t make sense to get on at Baiyappanahalli and get off at MG Road, unless you live or work along these lines or close by,” he added.

Srinivasa asserted that Metro’s Phase II needs to become operational to make a dent in the city’s infamous traffic scenario. As for now, he said, the BMTC, traffic police and BMTC would work together and try to figure out how the BMTC can help enhance Metro’s performance.

BMTC’s MD further added that by 2015, Bangalore’s population is supposed to increase by at least 15-20% and then the services of the BMTC and Metro would be desperately needed. By that time, he said, we should have sufficiently encouraged the private-vehicle-using population to use mass transport, be it the BMTC or Metro.

He said if the number of people using buses is about 33 lakh, it needs to be minimum 60 lakh by 2015.
