The Chikkaballapur police have now decided to register cases against those violating the trekking ban at Skandagiri hills, after a Bangalore-based techie died in an accidental fall on Saturday morning.

For the police personnel here, weekends are spent trying to prevent trekkers from climbing the Skandagiri hills. Though both the police and forest department have banned trekking in the area, enthusiasts from Bangalore, especially techies, turn up every weekend to climb the hill to have a view of sunrise.

Sub-inspector of Chikkaballapur rural police station, B Iyyanna Reddy, told DNA: “After we came to know that many people, especially from Bangalore, were trekking during the weekends, we had slapped a ban. We have deployed police personnel to enforce the ban. But, many still continue to do so illegally.”

The police have now decided to register cases against violators for trespassing and other appropriate sections of the law, he added. He said these trekkers have no idea about the dangerous terrain and they also run the risk of getting mugged by locals, or attacked by wild animals.

Local guides warned
The sub-inspector said trekking enthusiasts usually climb the hill at the night between 10pm and early morning. Local villagers guide them for a fee ranging from Rs500 to Rs1,000. The police have collected information regarding these guides and warned them.

“We have warned the guides that cases will be registered against them if they continue to guide trekkers. Many of them have stopped doing it,” Reddy said.

However, he lamented that these trekkers even go to the extent of climbing without a guide, which is even more
dangerous.

Police sources said that many come for trekking after consuming alcohol, which is very dangerous and can even prove fatal. They also add to the pollution of the hill by littering liquor bottles and plastic items such as cups and carry bags.

Police claim that many road accidents have taken place in the vicinity of Skandagiri owing to drunk driving.

Now the police are discussing with the forest officials concerned the ways and means to put a full stop to illegal trekking here.
