Day One, Phase 2 of census is smooth in Bangalore

Phase 2 of Census 2011 began early on Wednesday, as governor HR Bhardwaj and chief minister BS Yeddyurappa completed their census forms. In the first phase of the census, conducted in April-May 2010, house listing and house census was undertaken.

“Every house that we visited today cooperated. People responded, we did not meet anyone reluctant to answer,” said N Subramanyam, supervisor of a circle in Vasanth Nagar ward, also a senior teacher at St Mary’s Girls High School, Millers Road.

Enumeration work started in the Vasanth Nagar ward, where six blocks were  covered on Wednesday. In the 2001 census, the total population in the area was 5,28,50,562. MJ Jagadish, deputy director, census operations, said that a provisional count would be released by March 31 by India’s census commissioner and registrar-general, C Chandramouli.

The BBMP has deployed 16,000 enumerators in the area within its jurisdiction. Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa requested the people to cooperate.
