A 19-year-old college student was killed, after a tourist bus ran over her, when she tried to avoid hitting a pedestrian in front of Lalbagh main gate on Tuesday morning. The bus driver is absconding. Witnesses said the accident occurred due to civic negligence.

B Bhanu Priya, a resident of AT Halli Layout, Shanthi Nagar, was a first year BE student of BM Sreenivasaiah (BMS) College of Engineering. She was the only daughter of Badrinarayan and Kokila, both working in BHEL.

Priya was on her way to college on her two-wheeler after dropping her father, when the speeding bus, knocked her down. The bus, with passengers in it, was coming into the city from Sirsi.

Witnesses blamed a pit, which was dug up near the accident spot, and kept open for more than a month to lay cables and pipelines, as one of the reasons for the incident. Added to this, a lot of garbage was piled up on the road, forcing the girl to take a turn there.

G Veera Swamy, owner of a tyre shop in Kalasipalya, said, “The garbage, the pit that was kept open and the bus driver’s negligence, were the main reasons for the girl’s death.”

“I called many passers-by and auto drivers to take the girl to hospital, but unfortunately no one came forward. I, then, called one of my friends, but, by the time he came, it was too late. We tried a lot to save the girl by stopping the traffic and tried to take her to the hospital,” Veera Swamy rued.

“Even though the girl was wearing a helmet, her head was crushed along with the helmet in the impact,” said an eyewitness, Chetan Kumar.

Priya celebrated her 19th birthday last month. She was a very bright student and good at extra-curricular activities. She was passionate about arts and painting, and has got a huge collection of handicrafts, said Kiran Dhage, Priya’s cousin.

Police said Nanjunda, an eyewitness filed a complaint with the police. In his complaint, he said that the bus hit her from behind in front of Lalbagh West Gate bus stop.

The City Market police seized the bus and are investigating. Priya’s body was taken to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem and later handed over to her family.
