The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has given time to tainted mining companies to reply to its report. The companies can raise queries during a hearing fixed by the Supreme Court (SC). The hearing will be held between November 28 and December 1.

Some mining companies had filed a petition in the SC and some others approached the CEC two months ago and sought redressal. They placed a request, saying “nominal breaches may have occurred in the course of present survey. The survey team may evolve a redressal mechanism to rectify the report based on additional material submitted by the lessees.”

In its report on September 21, the CEC requested the SC to give permission for “a redressal mechanism for mining lease holders who wish to contest the findings.” The SC, in its judgment, set September 23 as the date. It stated that the “CEC as well as the joint team have received a number of representations from lease holders against the findings of the joint team. We hereby permit the CEC in this regard; thereafter (it) should be placed before this court for appropriate directions.”

The CEC, in its report, identified issues such as encroachment of forest area, constructions of illegal roads, dislocation of boundary pillars demarcating the borders between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, illegal deployment of heavy machinery, among others. Of the 124 mining companies, 40 mining companies have filed applications before the CEC.  Mine owners from Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga will attend the hearing in New Delhi. The mine owners must produce supporting documents to their queries.

The CEC advised the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI) to advise its members to contact the director of mines and geology and check boundary maps of their respective mining leases. January 15 is the deadline for the CEC to submit its final report to the SC.
