The attempted molestation case against renowned violin maestro L Subramaniam reached before a city court on Friday.

Police said they had submitted the first information report (FIR) before the additional chief metropolitan court.

The FIR was drawn on a complaint by the musician’s former maid.

Subramaniam has been charged under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.

The FIR was drawn on September 15. A Dalit organisation had approached the police with the complaint on behalf of the maid, L Bhagya, on September 3.

The complaint was lodged a day after Subramaniam complained of a theft and expressed his suspicion that the maid was behind the incident.

A senior investigating officer said that the police were under pressure from certain organisations, which forced them to file the FIR, even though no evidence was found against Subramaniam.

Though the FIR against the violinist was submitted to the court, the police were still suspecting the maid’s version.

“We will conduct a detailed investigation into both the cases. There will be no unnecessary harassment to the music maestro, as we know that she had committed the theft and wanted to escape by filing a counter-complaint, accusing him,” deputy commissioner of police (north) HS Revanna said.

Subramaniam’s daughter, singer and lyricist Bindu Seetaa Subramaniam, said her family was unaware of the FIR.
“We were assured that there was nothing to worry. The police also promised to inform us of any development in the matter,” she said adding that her father was in Chennai when the alleged incident had taken place.

“It is a false complaint. My father was in Chennai attending an event held to honour him,” Bindu said.

In her complaint, Bhagya claimed that Subramaniam had tried to drag her into his room several times. “On September 1 too, he pulled my hand and tried to drag me into his room. I objected, saying I will leave the job, if he repeated it. Angered, he lodged a case of theft against me,” the maid, who worked for the Subramaniams for eight months, said in her complaint.
