The high court on Monday directed the chairmen of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) to be present in the court on January 31 regarding a petition about pourakarmikas.
People’s Union for Civil Liberties has filed the petition, contending that there should be a high-level committee to look into the working conditions of the pourakarmikas. While hearing the petition, the high court pulled up the two utilities.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen observed that the chairmen of the BWSSB and the KUWSDB should get down into manholes at least once to know the conditions the pourakarmikas work in. The division bench then directed them to be present in the court on January 31.

Remove billboards: HC
The high court on Monday directed the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to remove every billboard or signboard on a disputed land at Nandini Layout within 48 hours.
The court was hearing the petition of Congress MLA NL Narendra Babu wherein he has challenged the alleged illegal denotification of one acre of land at the layout by former CMBS Yeddyurappa.
Babu had dragged Yeddyurappa to the court over the issue, contending that the former chief minister had mindlessly denotified the piece of land in October 2009. Babu had sought quashing of the denotification order so that the piece of land could be given to the BDA or the BBMP to convert it into a playground or a park.
While hearing the case on Monday, the division bench headed by Chief Justice Sen directed the BDA to ensure that the possession of the land remains with the utility and that billboards on the piece of land, if any, be removed within 48 hours.
The bench then adjourned the hearing to March 26.
