It’s breeding season for snakes and a busy time for rescuers who are getting five to eight calls every day.

Just one week back, a cobra was rescued from a pebble factory in Nagarhole by reptile conservationist Anees Mohammed. A rat snake was rescued at the Nike-Bhupathi tennis village in Kodigehalli gate. Rescuer Arun Kumar, who was called to the spot, said the snake was released into the forest.

Also only recently, a staff at the house of Ram Kumar, son-in-law of late actor Raj Kumar, found a rat snake in the compound.

“My staff spotted the snake in the parking area. They then called Anees Mohammed, who caught the snake and released it into the wild,” Kumar said.

Snakes made headlines when they were rescued from the homes of JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda and chief minister BS Yeddyurappa sometime back. These slithery visitors did not spare other celebrities.

In the past year alone, snakes have been rescued from the homes of senior judges of the high court, a principal secretary, a retired police commissioner, a software head honcho who lives in HSR Layout, Air Force commander Anil Jain, Vikram Kirloskar, vice-chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts, and film star Sudeep S.

Three snakes were rescued from Sudeep’s house in JP Nagar. Sudeepi’s father, Sanjeev S, said, “Cobras were caught thrice from our house.”

The most common varieties of snakes found and rescued from homes in Bangalore are rat snakes and cobras. Most of them come out into the open in between January and April either in the morning or evening, according to Prof Rahmath Ataaz, snake rescuer and head of the department of zoology at Al Ameen College. He heads the Society of Wildlife, Adventure, Research, and Education.

“Rat snakes look for their food — rats — and that is why they are found mainly near garbage dumps where rats thrive,” said Kumar.

“Snakes are not found only in select areas in the city. Rather they are found everywhere in Bangalore. We are getting lots of calls from the city’s outskirts. Snakes prefer damp areas because water cools them. Summer is their breeding season,” Mohammed said.
Among the four months, two months is their gestation period and two months the incubation period.
