Former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who is vehemently opposing the foreign tour of legislators, is himself a member of a house committee that is going on a ‘study tour’ abroad for 17 days. However, he is unlikely to go on the tour.

The committee will be touring Russia, Scandinavian countries, Egypt and other places from September 24 to October 10. Yeddyurappa was recently nominated to the house committee by speaker of legislative assembly KG Bopaiah in place of a member who had to move out after getting a berth in the Jagadish Shettar ministry.

Sources in the assembly secretariat said Yeddyurappa had recently attended a meeting of the committee, which discussed the foreign jaunt and other issues. The former CM missed the discussion on tour as he came late.

Yeddyurappa has openly criticised the foreign tours of MLAs as the state is facing a severe drought. He has advised legislators to personally supervise drought-relief work in their constituencies instead of going on foreign junkets.

An official of the secretariat said the former CM is unlikely to be part of the tour.

“He has openly demanded the cancellation of foreign tours of MLAs. Moreover, as per the Karnataka high court’s bail conditions, he cannot go out of Bangalore as the CBI is probing corruption charges against him. He can go out of Bangalore only if the court permits. Though we have not received official communication from him that he would not be a part of the tour, going by his statements, it is evident that he is opposing the tour.”

The house committee has 13 members, including members from all the three big parties in the state—BJP, Congress and JD(S). Among the Congress MLAs, NH Shivashankarappa Reddy, Raja Rayappa Naik, G Hampayya Nayak Ballatgi and from the BJP, Veerabhadrappa Halaravi, Yogish Bhat and Sanjay Patil have shown interest in being a part of the jaunt.

Some MLAs have already started the process of filing applications to get the visa in time.
