City police have cracked a marriage racket where brokers passed off women from economically weaker sections as prospective Jain brides and arranged their weddings with well-to-do grooms from the community.

Six persons, including a woman, have been arrested in this connection.

Police said the racket came into the open after a local Jain youth, Jitesh Lal, got married to a woman, who he believed was from his community, on March 12. Soon, he was shocked to know that she not only belonged to another community but had even given birth to a baby before their marriage.

The youth’s father, Chagan Lal, then filed a private complaint (PCR) in the chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) court against marriage broker Shanthi Lal and others.

On a directive from the court, the Chickpet police began investigations and busted the racket of marriage brokers.

The arrested persons are Shanti Lal, 40, his friend and marriage broker in Nasik in Maharashtra Asmath Lal, 45, associates Madan Lal, 35, Sanjay, 30 and Roopesh, 32. All the five persons are natives of Nasik and Mumbai. The police also arrested Divya, 26, of Nasik, who tied the knot with Jitesh Lal by hiding details of her past life and her community.

Deputy commissioner of police (west division) SN Siddaramappa said the Chickpet police team headed by inspector PO Shiva Kumar and sub-inspector Jagadish busted the racket. When the accused were arrested, two more girls from Maharashtra were found in their company in a four-wheeler.

On questioning, it turned out that the two girls, who did not belong to Jain community, were about to passed off as brides to a groom from Arasikere in Hassan district and another from Bangalore.

Both the girls were rescued and sent back to their native places in Maharashtra.

The police are looking into all other marriage proposals finalised by Shanti Lal to find out if the gang had perpetrated any more frauds.

Cases of criminal breach of trust, cheating and defamation have been registered against the accused based on the complaint lodged by Chagan Lal. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody.
