Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Sunday made big promises to the farmers stating that his government’s fourth budget would unleash a new era for the community in the state.
Speaking at the valedictory of the three-day state level Krishi Mela at Bajagoli village in Udupi district on the foothills of Western Ghats, the chief minister said the forthcoming budget, slated to be presented on February 24, would be pro-farmers. He said the government would provide every facility it could to the farmers, including loans at 1% interest for all agricultural operations.

“Too much time has been lost in providing the farmers their due. They have been neglected far too long in this country as a result they are now moving away from villages and quitting agriculture which is dangerous for the mankind. This budget will unleash a new era for farmers in Karnataka and this will be emulated by other states, I promise,” he said, participating in the event organised by Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP).

He said the government would hold a world class meet to bring farmers, technologists and industrialists to a single platform to come up with technological solutions for farming problems. In addition, a chain of cold storages would be created in at least 15 districts, to begin with, to help the farmers get the right value for their products, irrespective of the demand and supply conditions. “I have found out that one of the problems faced by the farmers was middlemen eating their profits. To alleviate this, the farmers will be encouraged to be in touch with the market directly through internet centres especially created for them. I will also create Agricultural Special Economic Zones where the farm products would be given value addition,” he said.

Yeddyurappa lauded the SKDRDP and said the Krishi Mela was a revolution of sorts, particularly in helping the government form farm policies. Many points discussed in different Krishi Melas held by the SKDRDP in the past have been inculcated by the governments from time to time. “I have examined the resolutions made in the last three Krishi Melas which has given me a deep insight into the problems of the farmers. I look forward to suggestions from SKDRDP for improving the farming sector in the state,” he said.
