The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) H Siddaiah Road Referral Hospital could have achieved the distinction of being the first corporation hospital to have 24X7 caesarean facilities, but the proposal could not take off.

But that was not due to lack of competent doctors or treatment facilities, but because of filthy surroundings outside the hospital.

However, the filthy surroundings have marred its image. Numerous automobile workshops, eateries and a bar are located near the hospital. The workshops often cause noise pollution in the area and the eateries dump garbage near the hospital compound, which often goes uncollected for days.

The biggest menace the hospital faces is of people urinating on its compound wall. Sources allege that garage workers and bar customers are the worst culprits.

Hospital superintendent Dr Saraswathi said the problem became so acute that they feared that urine may seep into the water sump located near the compound wall. She said that she had requested the police to post a constable near the hospital so as to prevent such activities. Ward corporator Kumari Avvayi constructed a pay-and-use public urinal inside the hospital premises despite objection from the health department.

“But people are not ready to use it a, she said. The corporator claims she had even approached police commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji to ensure that lorries and four wheelers are not parked near the compound, but lamented that there was no cooperation from the police.
