The residents of Defence Colony in Hoyasalanagar ward were happy when corporator Savitha Ramesh had distributed pamphlets and put up banners to announce the inauguration of development works at HAL 2nd Stage and Defence Colony.

Some of them had attended the pooja organised on December 2, 2011, to ensure completion of the development works without any hassle.

However, they were shocked when the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities gave importance to HAL 2nd Stage and ignored Defence Colony.

“Where was the need to distribute pamphlets and put up banners if the BBMP authorities do not want to take up asphalting work in our area,” asked Col Raj Mannar, president, Defence Colony Residents’ Welfare Association.

Many residents said that Ramesh wanted to take up asphalting work due to some political compulsions. They suspect that the funds meant for asphalting roads in Defence Colony were utilised in other areas of the ward.

“It seems the corporator is interested to keep her vote bank intact. She considers that we will not vote for her,’’ said a resident,
Coming down heavily on the BBMP authorities for neglecting the Defence Colony, Col Mannar said a few roads, especially third and fourth cross roads, needed immediate attention.  “No effort was made for the past few years to clear the silt from open drains,’’ said Col Mannar.

However, Ramesh said the BBMP had sanctioned `1.5 crore for asphalting the roads and the amount was sufficient only to asphalt the roads at HAL 2nd Stage.

“We have already sent a proposal to the BBMP to sanction Rs70 lakh for asphalting the roads in Defence Colony,’’ said Ramesh. “We thought Rs1.5 crore will be sufficient to asphalt all the roads, but we had to include a few more roads in HAL 2nd stage for asphalting.  Lack of funds compelled us not to take up asphalting the work at Defence Colony,” said Ramesh. But Col Mannar is not ready to agree with the corporator’s version of insufficient funds.
“Generally, the BBMP sanctions funds as per the proposal sent by the executive engineer and corporator. The proposal was to asphalt six main roads and cross roads at the Defence Colony.

The funds were sanctioned based on the proposal. Now, they are telling that BBMP did not sanction sufficient funds. I am in a dilemma to understand their logic. Why did they invite us for the programme meant for HAL 2nd Stage,’’ asked Col Mannar.

It was said S Raghu, MLA, CV Raman Nagar, had inaugurated the asphalting and other development works. When contacted, Raghu said: “We will take up the asphalting work at Defence Colony shortly.”
