At 64, Shantamma, a home-maker from the city, weighed 115 kg. Life was stagnant, as she was suffering from multiple obesity-related problems and required assistance even to make the slightest of movements. After gaining weight, her knee joints became weak and it was difficult for her to walk. That wasn’t all. Shanthamma also had a history of ischemic heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and bronchial asthma. And the orthopaedic surgeons she consulted suggested weight reduction prior to a knee replacement surgery.

For someone like Shantamma, considering her age and restricted movement capacity, any kind of weight reduction programme was out of question. So she lived a bed-bound immobile life for at least a year, before the family consulted Dr Aashish Shah, consultant gastrointestinal, laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon, Fortis Hospital.
“A thorough check-up of Shantamma’s problems was performed and based on the evaluation of the reports, she was advised a weight reduction surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, as it was felt that a significant weight reduction would help reverse a lot of her current problems,” said Dr Shah.

Shantamma underwent counselling about the proposed surgery and its potential benefits and side effects. “Considering the multiple complications that she was suffering from, a bariatric surgery at her age had risks,” added Dr Shah.

She was prescribed a standard preoperative calorie restricted diet. She was admitted to Fortis Hospitals, where Dr Aashish Shah and Dr Lingaraj Patil operated her in December last year.

A month later, she was back on her feet with her body weight reduced to 95 kg. She is able to walk without any assistance with little signs of knee-joint problems. Her quality of life and confidence has significantly improved. Also, there has been a significant improvement in her blood sugar level.

“Shantamma is expected to lose another 20 kg to 30 kg in the next eight to ten months. Now, while she is comfortable walking, a knee replacement surgery can further elevate her quality of life,” said Dr Shah.
