He went to the police station with a complaint. Investigators swung into action and cracked the case in just three hours, and arrested Maheshwari, the man’s relative. They also recovered the money from a neighbour’s terrace.
Police said Saravana was staying with his wife on the first floor of Maheshwari’s house at Hoysalanagar in TC Palya Main Road in Ramamurthynagar police limits.
In his complaint to police, Saravan said he and his wife had gone out of the house on the night of April 29 for about 30 minutes, and on returning found the suitcase containing Rs9.32 lakh missing from the almirah where it was kept. The money was the proceeds from the sale of his property in Tamil Nadu, Saravan, employed in a software company, told the police.
Investigators visited the scene and interviewed Maheshwari. Her response to their questions and behaviour made her a person of interest to the police. Further interrogation led the police to the neighbour’s terrace where the money had been hidden in an old bag.
Police said the accused had left the lock of the almirah open in a bid to mislead investigators into believing that the house had been burgled. The suitcase was found broke open and abandoned on her terrace.
Investigators said Maheshwari’s husband and two children were not involved in the crime.
Maheshwari of TN has been living in the city for a decade. Saravana came to the city after landing a job here. He has been staying with Maheshwari ever since, and three months ago, married the girl he had been dating. Following his marriage, Maheshwari gave them a room on the first floor of her house.
