Bangalore police sieze booty worth Rs1crore

Hulimavu police have recently arrested two gangs for their involvement in 50 cases of house-thefts and recovered property worth Rs1 crore from them.

In the first case, three persons, including a husband-wife duo, were arrested while planning to commit a theft in a locked house. The arrested are Manjunatha, 27; his wife Sumitra, 20; and their associate Prakasha, 26.

The trio used to steal valuables from locked houses and flee in a car. Manjunatha had bought a car with the money he got by selling stolen valuables.

Manjunatha, a native of Tamil Nadu, had earlier worked as a servant in the house of labour minister BN Bache Gowda. He started off by stealing mobile phones, wallets and later quit the job and began carrying out house-thefts.

Sumitra used to stay near the minister’s house and fell in love with Manjunatha. “Sumitra was aware of his criminal activities. They got married three years ago and she also became a gang member,” said Balaramegowda, inspector of Hulimavu police station.

After marriage, Manjunatha began taking Sumitra along during house-thefts. He and his wife used to target only locked houses. They broke into those houses and decamped with the booty, consisting of diamond, gold jewellery, silver articles and cash.
Many times, the police, after being alerted about the thefts, used to stop vehicles at some check points, but the duo’s impeccable attire and jewellery used to evoke little suspicion among the men in khaki.

More than 35 warrants were pending against Manjunatha until his arrest. Manjunatha and Prakasha have been involved in thefts for more than a decade. They also targeted some posh apartment complexes.

The trio were caught when they were planning to commit house-theft in Hulimavu police limits at the end of 2011. On interrogation, the police found that they had stolen valuables from different police station limits.

They sold and pledged the stolen valuables in the name of their friends and relatives with finance companies, pawn brokers in Kolar, KGF, Chikkaballapur, Devanahalli, Hoskote, Yeshwanthapur and other places.

The police seized stolen properties worth Rs65 lakh from them, including 1kg diamond jewellery, gold necklace, chains, bangles, biscuits and rings, 20kg silver articles, cars and two motorcycles.
With their arrest, the police have solved five cases of house-theft in Hulimavu, three from Bannerghatta and two cases in HSR layout police stations.

Allegedly, they are involved in house-theft cases in Ulsoor, Ramamurthynagar, Mahadevapura, Ulsoorgate, Madiwala, Koramangala, Tilaknagar, Gangammanagudi, Madanayakanahalli, Mysore, Chintamani, Channapattana, KGF. These cases are yet to be solved.

Gang of six held
The police have also arrested a six-member gang that employed a similar modus operandi of using cars to transport burgled items.

The arrested persons are Manjunatha (not the same person as mentioned above), 26; Sharath Kumar, 21; Velu, 20; Arun, 19; Harish Babu, 38; and Ramesha, 26.

The police have 47 warrants against Manjunatha. The accused used cars to flee after committing robbery and used to sleep in these cars.

They used to avoid going to their houses for a couple of days after committing a burglary.

The police seized stolen valuables worth Rs35 lakh from them, including gold jewellery and silver articles. The police have solved eight theft cases from different stations.
