Bangalore (Urban) deputy commissioner MK Aiyappa on Thursday announced that a scientifically built e-waste management system would be set up in Electronics City, Whitefield and Bommasandra, following the recent Supreme Court verdict on e-waste management.

Aiyappa was speaking at the inauguration of a dry waste management facililty in Electronics City. “There are huge amounts of e-waste being in these areas and there is an urgent need to manage this. Currently, there are only 13 e-waste collectors in the city and they are not doing it in a scientific manner. They only collect about 10-15 per cent of the total junk.”

Currently, the state government is looking for land that can be given to industries on a lease or partnership basis in order to open the collection and disposal centres. “We will be getting the guidelines for the e-waste management by April this year and we will start working on it soon,” he said.

The solid waste management facility is a joint venture of the Waste Wise Trust and the Electronic City Industries Association (ElCIA). The facility is expecting to receive dry recyclable materials on a daily basis from its associated companies. The obsolete items will be then sorted into paper, plastic, glass and metals.

The sorted materials will be sent to recycling factories.
Baby Ramaswamy, president of ELCIA, hopes to arrive at zero waste management in Electronics City in the near future. “There are over 150 companies in Electronics City. So far we have collected waste from four companies. We have been providing training in waste management to the staff of these four companies. Eventually, we will organise training programmes to other companies,” Ramaswamy said.

Karnataka Pollution Control Board chairman AS Sadahivaiah, and former secretary, department of ecology and environment, Dr AN Yellappa Reddy, were also present on the occasion.
