Bangalore to get underground cables to prevent dangling wires

The state power authorities are working on laying underground (UG) cables in the city to prevent dangling wires, which pose danger to residents, especially during the monsoon.

The state power authorities are working on laying underground (UG) cables in the city to prevent dangling wires, which pose danger to residents, especially during the monsoon.

“Currently, the city has more than 150km of overhead lines that are considered dangerous,” said Prahalad G, executive engineer, major works (south), Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL).

KPTCL is laying 220 Kilo Volts Ampere (KVA) UG cables in many parts of the city. Chief engineer of the company, MKH Pujar, said that for the first time, two big sub-stations have been set up for the 220 KVA line on 1.5 acres against the usual requirement of four to five acres. He said the station, called Gas Insulated Station, is more secure than the conventional station.

In total, 28.02km of 220 KVA UG cables will be ready by the end of 2012 in south Bangalore. The routes are East Division Compound (EDC) of KPTCL, Residecy Road, to 'A' station, Ananda Rao Circle: 4.02km; EDC to HAL sub-station: 8.34km; EDC to Nimhans sub-station: 4.98km; and HSR Layout sub-station to Nimhans: 10.68km. Prahalad said cables have been commissioned along the EDC-HAL route. The work on laying UG cables on EDC–Nimhans route is in the final stage. The work on HSR Layout-Nimhans route will be completed by the end of 2012.
Gopal Krishna, executive engineer, major works (north), KPTCL, said only one major UG line is being laid in northern part of the city. About 19km of 66 KVA UG cables is also being laid in the city.

There are EDC to MG Road: 1.95km; commissioner EDC to Shantinagar BMTC bus stand: 3.7km; and EDC to Austin Town: 2km. Prahalad said work on the EDC–MG Route was over. The work was half-way through on EDC–Shanthinagar route. He said the cables from EDC to Austin Town will be laid by 2012. Also, four-km-long UG cables will be laid from Kengeri to Sir MV Layout. The work will be over by the end of 2012. An 8-km line is being laid along Vrishabhavathi valley.  Pujar said the total project will cost about Rs120 crore, excluding the cost of stations. Each kilometre of UG cables costs Rs3 crore.
