The Bangalore corporation has decided to set up temporary shops near Russell Market for the vendors whose shops were gutted in a fire mishap on Saturday.

The BBMP, on Saturday, said that 123 of its shops were gutted. On Sunday, the BBMP included 10 more shops to the list. BBMP’s deputy commissioner (estate) Muzibulla Zafari said the market’s damaged portion would be reconstructed. He added that for the time being, temporary shops would be provided to the 133 vendors near the market.

Further, Zafari said the compensation to the vendors would depend on the value of the goods destroyed. Speaking about compensation, he said that in some shops, goods worth more than Rs5 lakh were gutted whereas in some, the loss was of less than Rs50,000.

He added that although a government order states that the maximum compensation for a shop gutted is Rs25,000, the BBMP, on humanitarian grounds, would pay on the basis of loss incurred. The compensation would be given to the shop owners on Monday.

Meanwhile, the BBMP has decided to restructure the building instead of renovating, saying it has been damaged beyond recognition. BBMP commissioner MK Shankarlinge Gowda said the building’s external heritage look would be retained but the damaged portion inside would be restructured.

He said the BBMP would direct all shop-owners to keep a fire extinguisher in their shops. Also, to preserve the heritage building, traders will not be allowed to make modifications to the structure.

Sources in the BBMP said Gowda was in favour of creating a new complex at the market’s rear-end. If it materialises, it will be a public-private partnership. It will have just ground floor and first floor.

There will be a separate area for chicken and mutton shops with better facilities. A proposal in this regard will be sent to the state government, the source added.
