Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will begin the demolition of the ramp of Mantri Square mall at 8 am on Wednesday. While the decision was announced by commissioner Siddaiah at a council meeting on Tuesday, the announcement of its date and timing came late at night.

During zero hour, former opposition party leader M Nagaraj raised the issue. “The BBMP has not been able to take up any action against Mantri mall even though there are enough documents to prove that the ramp had encroached on BBMP property. It has created a serious traffic problem for the public. Even after noted writer UR Anantamurthy protested against the mall, there was no action. I want to know whether the BBMP is under pressure from any person for not taking any action so far,” he said.

During the agreement, the BBMP had laid 21 conditions before the Mantri developers. Among them was the rehabilitation of a slum. But none of the conditions were met by the developers, he said.
Siddaiah said there was no pressure from anyone regarding the ramp issue.

“We are widening the road by 4 metres on both the sides. When we went for demolishing the ramp, the mall officials and management requested us to give them time. But the deadline has expired and I've directed the officials to demolish the ramp and compound for road widening,” Siddaiah said.

“As for the rehabilitating of the slum, the BBMP has constructed houses at Laggere and a few families have shifted. But 20 families are demand ing that new houses should be given to them in the same area,” he said.

Nagaraj was not satisfied with the commissioner’s answer. He said the BBMP should demolish the building (mall) for violation of rules and not just the ramp.
