The long, anxious wait to get police green signal while applying for passports or for getting police verification certificates (PVC) may soon be a thing of past, thanks to Karnataka police’s new IT initiative.

The police verifications can be broadly classified into passport verification and PVC. The PVCs are issued for various purposes ranging from job verification (in case of PSUs and private sector), antecedents verification in case of marriage alliances, domestic servants, NCC students attending training camps, and the like.

As a first step the police have brought out one common form for all verification purposes. Earlier, various forms were issued depending on the purpose for which the verification was sought.

Moreover, it is no longer necessary to trek all the way to police commissioner’s office to get the application form. It can be downloaded from the Karnataka state police or Bangalore city police websites. The fees can be remitted either online or at any of the Bangalore One centres; no need to visit the treasury bank.

Once the application is submitted online the applicant is issued a code, which he can use it to track the status of his application, thereby avoiding numerous visits to local police station and commissioner’s office.

The submitted application is received by the commissioner’s office and it gets forwarded to the local police station directly. Even the time consuming antecedents’ check is now being carried out by the software. The report is then generated either at commissioner’s office or at local police station as desired.

According to ADGP Praveen Sood, who heads the police computer wing, “This procedure has been introduced throughout the state and the same applies to the districts as well.”
