After his first inspection of Bangalore Metro on Wednesday, commissioner for railway safety (CRS) Dinesh Kumar Singh said there was still room for improvement.

“Not that it can be 100% perfect, but there is still room for improvement. There are no lapses in the construction part of the project. But improvements can be made in their operating systems,” he said.

The commissioner, his team and directors and engineers of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) started inspections at 9.30 am from Mahatma Gandhi station on MG Road. By the end of the day, they had inspected the section from MG Road to Swami Vivekananda road stations.

“We have inspected the section, quality of tracks, viaduct, operating and maintenance systems, passenger amenities and facilities at stations and overall infrastructure in these stations. Tomorrow, we will be inspecting Byappanahalli station and the depot,” Singh said.

The inspections may continue till Friday. The CRS has to check the signalling system and other works. Only after checking every aspect, including passenger safety, he will give his green signal for Metro’s commercial operation.

When DNA asked him how many days it would take for him to issue the safety certificate once the inspection was completed, Singh said: “It depends on the advices I give to the BMRCL to improve and how much time they take to confirm me back on the improvements. Once they confirm rectifications back to me, we will issue the safety certificate.”

Singh did not rule out early rectifications or longer inspections.  He has finished the paper work and was briefed on the MG Road to Swami Vivekananda section and its technical details at his office.
Signals indicate that BMRCL is just one step behind its final safety certification.
