If mayor SK Nataraj has his way, about four lakh property owners, whose properties are located on revenue sites have a reason to smile.

Nataraj, in a letter written to revenue minister Karunakara Reddy, has requested to extend the time period of the order dated September 28, 2009, which facilitates regularisation of revenue sites by paying land conversion charges.

The move also means that these property owners need not wait for the Akrama-Sakrama scheme to realise the same dream.

The mayor in his letter to the minister has said that about 3.5 lakh to 4 lakh properties, most of them located in new zones of Bangalore, will be benefited from the extension of the time period of the order and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would get additional revenue. Nataraj also said that once the land conversion is done, the property owners can easily get their khata done.

“Through this, the BBMP acts as a single window agency and collect both conversion and improvement fee. The conversion fee would be remitted to urban development authorities,” he said.

It can be noted here that following an amendment made to Karnataka Land Revenue Act in 2009, the state government issued an order asking revenue site owners, who have not got their land conversion done by the Bangalore deputy commissioner, (sites registered before December 31, 2008) to pay the land conversion fee and get their properties regularised.

However, the order had fixed a time period of one year for the public to avail the facility starting from September 28, 2009.

The mayor in his letter has said that not many Bangaloreans were aware of the order at that time and hence not many have availed the benefit. “I have requested the revenue minister to extend the time period for two more years for the good of the public,” said Nataraj.

He also said that the practice of collection of improvement charges and awarding khata certificates to property owners was there till 2007. However, the collection of improvement charges from revenue site owners has been stopped since January 2, 2007, following an amendment to the Karnataka Land Revenue Act in the same year.
