Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who inaugurated the Kempegowda Award distribution function to mark the birth anniversary of the founder of Bangalore, said the state government has approved of naming Bangalore International Airport as Nadaprabhu Kempegowda International Airport.

“We have sent the request to the Central government for approval”, he said.

In 1537, Kempegowda built the historic fort and he is considered as the founder of Bangalore. The city has developed beyond the four towers built by Kempegowda. According to the recent census report, the city’s population has touched one crore.

“This has made the state government to meet challenges like providing drinking water, health, education, security and others to the residents. We have to strive to bring the past glory to the city,” the chief minister said.

Speaking on Metro, he said the first phase of the work will be completed shortly. “We had announced that it will start by Ugadi festival, but due to technical problems, we could not run the train,” he said.

“The government has spent `3,383 crore for providing drinking water to the city. Cauvery 4th stage will be completed soon to provide drinking water to the city,” he said.

Kempegowda museum is in place and a statue will be installed in Cubbon Park.

Lawmaker HN Ananth Kumar requested Yeddyurappa to form a committee to pressure the Centre to rename the airport after Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.

“The chief minister has fought for classical language status for Kannada. I want him to fight for naming the airport after Kempegowda. I also request him to direct the airports authority to mention the airport as ‘Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Airport’ while making announcements during flight take-offs and landings,” he said.
