The State Bar Council on Saturday called for a state-wide boycott of the legal proceedings on Monday, in protest against ‘onslaught’ by the police and ‘partisan attitude’ of the media against the advocate community.

The council on Saturday had called for an emergency meeting at 11.30am. However, chairman Magadam Anand Kumar Appu was not present. Vice-chairman Srinivas Babu had called the meeting and a resolution was finalised by 2.15 pm.

Former chairman of the State Bar Council Sadashiv Reddy told DNA, “Taking a grave view of things and to protect the dignity, importance and the independence of the bar council and to express its unity in the hour of crisis, we have called upon all advocates in the state to abstain from the court work on Monday.”

The Bar Council resolution said that it welcomes the judicial inquiry ordered by the government and the council should take active part in presenting the true facts before the inquiry forum.

Reddy said the resolution was handed over to the Bangalore advocates association in the high court and they too have accepted it. The resolution stated that, “The continuous partisan telecast by the electronic media was provocative and increased the frenzy. It is the abuse of press freedom.”
