A police inspector’s inability to strike a balance between hectic work schedule and domestic commitment took a tragic turn when his 36-year-old wife committed suicide by shooting herself with the cop’s service pistol in Banashankari on Sunday.

The deceased has  been identified as Shubha Sudarshan, a resident of 1st Cross, 10th Main, Giriraja Layout, Banashankari.

The exact reason behind the suicide could not immediately ascertained, but preliminary investigation revealed that Shubha had undergone an open heart surgery three years ago and was suffering from back pain for the past couple of years. This could be one of the reasons behind the extreme step, police said.

Shubha took the extreme step after her husband PS Sudarshan, attached with Commercial Street police station, could not keep the promise of taking her out on Saturday evening. She waited in vain as Sudarshan, who due to last-minute changes, was deputed on night duty at Freedom Park, could reach home only around 3:30am on Sunday.

The couple had a fight before Sudarshan went to sleep. After Sudarshan fell asleep, Shubha went to the room where the service pistol was kept. She opened the lock of the pistol and shot her right temple. The bullet passed through her head and hit the glass cupboard in the room.

The incident came to light around 7.30am when Sudarshan woke up and found Shubha in a pool of blood. Sudarshan told police that he was in deep sleep and did not hear the firing. Police suspect that the incident might have occurred between 4am and 7.30am.

“On preliminary investigation, it is clear that she has committed suicide. But the exact reason could be ascertained only after investigation,” deputy commissioner of police Sonia Narang said.
Couple had frequent fights.

Shubha’s elder brother Keshava filed a complaint with Banashankari police. The complaint, however, did not make any allegations against Sudharsan. Keshava said that Shubha had spoken to him on Saturday when everything looked normal, a statement seconded by the parents of the deceased.

However, requesting anonymity, one of Shubha’s relatives said that the couple used to fight regularly. “But they did not had any argument for the past few days. We are shocked by the incident,” said the relative.

Shubha and Sudarshan were married for 11 years. Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had regular arguments after two years of their marriage. The couple also had disagreement over the education of its two sons — Hari Sudharsan, 10, and Srinivas Sudarshan, 8 — who study in Bangalore Public School.

The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem in KIMS Hospital. A case has been registered in Banashankari police station.

Shubha is a native of Tamil Nadu and her parents reside in GKW Layout near Vijayanagar. The parents of Sudarshan live in their own house in Chamarajpet, while the inspector had taken a house on lease in Giriraja Layout, Banashakari.

Sudarshan had earlier worked in Electronics City and Banashankari police stations. He was also attached with Interpol police in the city.
