Kitchen comes up in Basavanagudi station to provide hygienic food to the staff.
Step in to the Basavanagudi police station and the first to welcome you is a kitchen.
Set up on June 14, the new addition to the police station was necessitated after the staff suffered from expensive and unhygienic food, available at a long distance.
This has led to a better and healthy style of functioning in the police station.
The entire staff and prisoners have access to food — prepared by two army officers; tea is distributed timely and only lunch is served every day. Only vegetarian food is offered to the 145-strong staff that works on two shifts. A maid appointed by the police station takes care of the kitchen's cleaning in the mornings.
Before the kitchen came up, the place used to be a dark, dirty and dusty storehouse where books were preserved. Now it has two windows, sufficient for good ventilation. An exhaust fan will soon be installed in the kitchen.
Station house officer, Mohammed Aslam, whose came up with the idea of setting up the kitchen said he had the thought for a long time. "I see my boys eating on the footpath and suffering due to unhygienic food. After a lot of reluctance from other officers, we were able to implement it. I know the importance of hygienic food since I was in pharmaceuticals earlier. I believe that a family that eats together stays together."
Regarding his other plans, Aslam said, "I have a democratic style; I consult everyone. Our neighbourhood can anytime come for assistance in their absence at home to guard periodically. We want to create a friendly atmosphere where the police help the kids to and fro school."
To address the stress factor, the police station will soon plant medicinal and aromatic plants in and around the campus. An aquarium and a pond with ducks and rabbits will come up in the premises.
The tiled 40-sqft kitchen is equipped with basic amenities like a stove, a wash basin, soaps, closets full of food items and provisions, utensils that include plates, many glasses, spoons, dishes, pans, bowls and mugs. In addition, it also has a microwave, induction stove and induction pan.
The police station also has a conference room and an advanced computer room that takes care of most of the documents.
